Why Sealcoating Is So Important For An Asphalt Surface

Asphalt can be a great choice for your driveway because it gives you a smooth and nice-looking surface. It also has so many advantages over other types of surfaces. It lasts a long time, can withstand the elements well in different climates, and more.  What is sealcoating?

Sealcoating is a combination of particles and liquids that act as a protective layer for asphalt. They get rolled on the existing asphalt to give it a fresh coat of protection. The sealcoating will cause the asphalt to make it look new again, to protect it from things like grease and oil, UV rays, moisture, chemicals, and other things that can damage it. The process of having your asphalt sealcoated can also help it to last for years longer and have fewer repair issues come up along the way. 

How can sealcoating protect the asphalt from moisture damage?

When your asphalt is sealcoated, the fresh coating will fill hairline cracks and other gaps that are starting to occur in the asphalt. When these cracks are filled in, it will prevent moisture from getting beneath the surface of the asphalt, which would eventually cause damage. The longer you prevent moisture from penetrating it, the longer the asphalt can last. 

How will having the asphalt sealcoated protect it from UV damage?

UV rays will cause problems with the asphalt over time. This happens because the UV rays and air will cause the process of oxidation. This causes the asphalt to become brittle over time. When it is brittle, it can get cracks and the cracks can grow quickly. Other deterioration can happen to the asphalt as well, and this can include corners and edges that start to crumble and more. Over time, things like grease, oil, and chemicals will join with the binder of the asphalt and cause it to soften. When it is softer, it will be more prone to problems like potholes. Sealcoating the asphalt will help to add a new, stronger layer of protection that adds a lot more time to the asphalt surface. 

How does sealcoating make a surface look better?

Over time, asphalt will start to look light gray instead of black. It will also lose its nice shine. Also, instead of being smooth, it will start to get very rough. Sealcoating gives back all those nice features the asphalt had when it was new, causing it to look great again.
